This article is for the species. For the Red-Eyed Sentinel V tamed, see Sparky.
Anti-Drone Sentinels, simply referred to as Sentinels, are mechanical droids designed to hunt and terminate any drone that crosses their path.
They serve as an antagonistic force in "Dead End", guarding the underground office facility of Cabin Fever Labs.
Physical Appearance[]
The Sentinels are robotic animals that resemble dromaeosaurids (raptors). The Utahraptor, for example, is a close match in both silhouette and size. They have three glowing eyes on each side of their heads and two smaller forward-facing ones in the middle.
Types[]
Normal (Blue-Eyed)[]
Sentinels, by default, have blue eyes and are programmed only to attack drones (specifically Workers infected by the Absolute Solver and Disassembly Drones); they remain subservient to humans. They can emit a flash of light that causes a boot-loop in any drone to directly see it. A drone in a boot-loop is frozen and unresponsive, which allows a Sentinel to destroy them with ease.
Red-Eyed[]
In cases where a Sentinel bites onto a human, the Sentinel will short-circuit and be rendered offline, before rebooting, gaining red eyes and lights, and deviating from its own program. The only known Red-Eyed Sentinel to ever be seen in the series is Sparky.
Abilities[]
They were designed by humans as a specific counter to the Disassembly Drones, and as such prioritise being intelligent and sneaky against their targets and using their "boot-loop" eye stare.[1] Even when outnumbered the Sentinels are ruthlessly efficient in terminating drones, as hinted by the countless Disassembly Drone corpses and parts scattered around the entrance of Cabin Fever Labs. Their greatest asset is their aforementioned ability to boot-loop any Drone they hit with their lights and render them immobile.
Though their aggression was never intended to be directed towards humans, they may simply mistake a human for a drone. Once one spotted "Tessa," its first response was to try to boot-loop her and it became confused when she was unaffected. She reaches out to the mechanical predator in hopes of subduing it, and it decides to almost rip her arm off. However, one can argue that the Sentinels can distinguish between humans and drones, with "Tessa" being an example as in "Mass Destruction", she was revealed to be Cyn wearing the human as a skinsuit the entire time.
In "Absolute End", it's revealed that Sentinels can actually be tamed, with Serial Designation V not only surviving them but even forming an alliance with one, fighting Serial Designation J alongside it.
| Ability | Function |
|---|---|
| Claws | The Sentinels have sharp claws, much like real-life dromaeosaurids. They use them to pin their targets down. They're also used for digging and climbing. |
| Sharp Teeth | The Sentinels have an array of sharp metallic teeth lining their jaws. They're used to deliver the finishing blow to subdued victims. They're also used to intimidate targets. |
| Extreme Agility and Strength | The Sentinels are depicted as beastly creatures that can tear Drones apart easily. They're also very agile and nimble, as was shown when one of them quickly caught up to, attacked, and killed Beau. |
| Boot-Loop Light | The Sentinels have a blindingly bright light built into their forehead, which can emit a brief flash of light similar to a camera flash. Although harmless to humans, the light immediately boot-loops any drone, Worker or Disassembly, unfortunate enough to witness it, rendering them immobile. The only way a drone can prevent themselves from being bootlooped is to have some sort of barrier between them and the Sentinels' lights, such as when Cyn didn't get immobilize due to wearing an astronaut helmet while disguised as astronaut Tessa, as well as V wearing glasses to avoid getting bootlooped while fighting against the Sentinels. It is also shown in a concept art for Alice that she uses her mirror to avoid being bootlooped, therefore seeing the flash in reflections should work as a countermeasure, but we never see it in the show. |

Trivia[]
- The Sentinels resemble the Velociraptor from Jurassic Park and World.
- In the Sentinels' concept art, they closely resembled the Neotheropod dinosaur Dilophosaurus, judging by their distinct dual head crests and large size. These were scrapped for unknown reasons.
- During GlitchX 2023, Liam Vickers stated that Sentinels were originally floating orbs, similar to Wheatley from the Portal franchise.[1]
- He also states that a possible in-universe reason for why they were designed as raptors may be because the scientists "got cheeky" and loved dinosaurs, and so made them as such to "look cool".
- The Sentinels were referenced in "Cabin Fever" when Uzi is looking at the papers. One of them reads "LIGHTS BELOW" and is damaged with claw marks.
- The red-eyed Sentinel's canon name is Sparky, as confirmed by Glitch Inn.[2]
- The definition of a Sentinel is "a soldier or guard to watch over something."
- According to Liam, the Sentinels have independently developed their own tap-based language outside of their human programming to secretly communicate complex thoughts, plans and instructions among each other, with the Sentinel that called away the red-eyed Sentinel with two taps and a scratch being a hint to it. Liam also wishes he pushed for more inclusions in the episode to better showcase it.[3]
